Worth While Web
-
An interactive world map
showing the worldwide work.
Try panning from side to side and zooming in.
Ever wonder where Belize is? Or Madagascar? Now you can find them.
Brother Andy Ward created a map that is trés nifty.

Cautious as serpents
On Windows you need an anti-virus program
AND the virus scanner needs to be updated at least every week.
You should use only one anti-virus program.
If you already use Norton or AVG or Avast or something else,
you’re all set
(as long as you update the virus signatures every week).
-
Grisoft’s AVG Anti-Virus
offers a free edition. Some folks like it better than the ones you buy.
-
Avast Anti-Virus
released a new version.
Our sister Lynda writes:
“Avast offers a free home edition that I recommend to all my
clients. It is a really nice, friendly program, and is free with
registration for 14 months. Once the period is up, all you
have to do is re-register to get 14 more months of free updates.”
-
Norton AntiVirus warns about a possible malicious script?
Fix that by applying all of the Microsoft Office
service packs.
Word-like programs and other tools
-
Try the free
MS Word viewer
if you don’t have Microsoft Word.
(Thanks, sister Dorinda)
-
Try the free
Open Office suite
as a substitute for Microsoft Office.
(Thanks, sister Dorinda)
-
Try the free AbiWord program,
another substitute for Microsoft Word,
if Open Office is too complicated.
Smaller than 5 megabytes,
it's a much smaller download than the 45-megabyte Open Office too.
Open Office may be fancier, but AbiWord is simpler.
(Thanks, sister Robin)

7-Zip is a free unzip program.
-
Tune up
your Windows XP screen to make it more readable.
You could save your eyes some serious strain.
Reference works
The sites below are not JW sites but they’re not apostate either.
They have free Bible programs, Bibles, and reference works.
-
The dmoz open directory project
is an index like Yahoo.
This page of free Bible software mentions programs for
Palm, PocketPC, Macintosh, Linux, Windows, and others.
-
E-Sword
offers (lots of) Bibles, dictionaries like Strong’s,
reference works like Antiquities of the Jews by Josephus,
and other electronic tools.
Our brother Leo writes:
“The very basic program has
18 English Bible translations, 14 commentaries,
and 12 dictionaries—all linked and interwoven together!”
-
God’s Word Online
is a paraphrase Bible in Adobe Reader (PDF) format.
So you can read it on Linux, Windows, the Mac, your Palm, PocketPC,
and still other computer flavors.
If you don’t have the time or the inclination
to make your own electronic version of the NWT,
this is a great paraphrase Bible to download.
The page about
reading levels of different Bibles
is fascinating.
The KJV is grade 12,
meaning that readers with a 12th grade education can understand it.
The Living Bible, one of the more readable paraphrase Bibles,
is grade 8. Their publication God’s Word is grade 4 or 5.
